How to protect your identity when using the internet

We are now living in the internet world where almost everything can be accessed with just a few clicks. Technology has indeed evolved and come a long way. Computers and the internet have changed the way of life. With changes come challenges and one of them is how to protect your identity. Online identity theft is rampant. It steals not only a person’s identity but as well as the person’s financial details.

To stay protected while surfing the net, you should do the following:

Protect your username and password, both personal and business, like Vann Heating & Air – The first lines of defense when surfing the net are your usernames and passwords. Make sure you create a unique and strong password, which is a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using predictable passwords such as your birthday, the name of your pet, the name of your kid, and the likes. See to it that you create a unique password for every account. Do not use the same password for multiple accounts. It would be a lot of passwords to memorize but better safe than sorry.

Use two-factor authentication

If your username and password are compromised, the two-factor authentication provides an added level of security. Hackers won’t be able to access your account.

Update your software always

By keeping your software updated, you will be able to improve the built-in security functions. You will be able to prevent attacks before it could even happen. You need to update the operating system of your home and computer. The same thing goes for your web browser, mobile apps, and anti-virus software.

Check before you click

When you receive an email from an unknown source, you should first verify the validity of the email. Phishing is one of the common ways for hackers to access your information. Malicious emails look credible and if you are not cautious, you will end up as a victim. Before clicking the email, you should check the following:

  • Does the email come from a valid source?
  • Are there any spelling errors in the email?
  • Does it contain a valid link or attachment?

Check the website URL

Before clicking on any site, make sure you check for https security. These five letters see to it that the page is secure and can be trusted. A site is a trusted one if you see a small green lock and next to it is the word “secure.”

Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi

A public Wi-Fi as the name indicates is something that can be accessed by everyone. It is not a secure network, which gives the hacker the chance to steal your information. If you are going to use public Wi-Fi, make sure you do not open sites that require sensitive information such as your personal and financial information.

Using the internet has pros and cons

Although it makes out life easier than before, it also has some loopholes such as exposing you to identity theft. To protect yourself when surfing the net, you need to strictly observe the measures mentioned above.
